School Workshops & Program FAQ

SCHOOL WORKSHOPS & AFTER SCHOOL/ LUNCH PROGRAM FAQ

HOW CAN A PHYS-ED TEACHER OR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR PREPARE FOR YOUR SPORTS?
The number of students participating in the School Workshop or After School/ Lunch Program and gym space will dramatically affect the quality and play time of our sports.

Our sports require a playing area that will provide ample space between players (i.e. large full gym with few students on the court is best).  Case in point, the sport of floorball playing area is 20 m x 40 m (60 ft x 120 ft) and plays with five players and a goalie.  Floorball plays similar to soccer and provides much space between players which allows for ball movement.  In smaller playing areas, such as school gyms, the number of players on the court would need to be reduced to 4 on 4, or 3 on 3.  This would also depend on the grade/age and even size of the players.

Consideration should also be given to the number of participating students and time allotment for the School Workshop or After School/ Lunch program.  If the number of students is high, more students would remain on the sidelines during play and/or the play time of players on the court be limited in order to provide all the students the opportunity to get engaged.

If the time allotment was less than one hour, it would be challenging to provide the proper overview and engagement of our sports, more so if the gym was small and the student count high.

Ideally, the use of the entire gym floor would work best with a minimum of 8 players and a maximum of 20 players over an hour session.  This may not be possible for School Workshops but more likely for After School/ Lunch Program particularly if a sign up form was used for students to participate.

That being said, Premier Sports Leagues instructors have demonstrated our sports during class to schools with small a gym and 30 students over a 30 minutes per gym session.  It is challenging and will require a conversation between the Phys-ed/ Athletic Director and a Premier Sports League operator/ instructor prior to scheduling a School Workshop.

WHAT ARE THE BEST GRADE LEVELS TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR SPORTS?
Although our Premier Sports Leagues sports are suitable for most all age/ grade students, there are ‘sweet spots’ where the delivery of the sports are more receptive and the engagement of the students higher.

It has been our experience that students from grade 3 up to grade 8 are the most engaging.  This is not to say that the grade levels higher would not be suited to learning and playing our sports, but the probability for the majority of the students to engage lessens as the grade levels increase past grade 8.
As for grades below grade 3 we do not recommend our School Workshops or After School/ Lunch Programs simply because we have found that age group does not have the dexterity nor awareness for safe play (i.e. floorball sticks usually are raised above their heads throughout play and thus provides a hazard for an eye injury).

Safety is of utmost importance to our instructors, so we take what measures we can to mitigate any possible injuries from occurring.

WHAT ROLE CAN I PLAY IN YOUR SCHOOL WORKSHOPS OR AFTER SCHOOL/ LUNCH PROGRAMS AS THE PHYS-ED TEACHER OR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?
For the most part, our Premier Sports Leagues instructor can manage the School Workshop and After School/ Lunch Floorball Program. We are however disadvantaged at knowing the behaviours of the students and which students play best with each other.  This could lead to some conflicts or unbalanced teams so guidance in forming teams would be helpful.

It is expected, however, that any behaviour issues that arise from students be addressed by the Phys-Ed/ Athletic Director and not be left to our instructor.

If possible, we would like to see the Phys-Ed Teacher/ Athletic Director participate in playing our sports and/or refereeing to garner an appreciation for the sports and feel more confident should they decide to purchase equipment and play the sports with other students/ grade levels.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO BEFORE ORDERING YOUR SCHOOL WORKSHOPS OR AFTER SCHOOL/ LUNCH PROGRAMS?
Schools should consult with Premier Sports Leagues on the gym size, number of students participating, grade/age and general ability requirements of students prior to ordering the School Workshop or After School/ Lunch Program.  This will help provide our instructors with enough information so they can prepare to bring proper equipment, teaching aids and determine space/ mini game requirements.  It will also give both parties a good sense of what to expect so that the students are safe, they learn and they have fun!

CAN A SCHOOL PURCHASE EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY FROM PREMIER SPORTS LEAGUES?
Yes. There are two options with purchasing our sports equipment for a school, more notably our floorball equipment.

The FIRST is to purchase the pre packaged School Floorball Kit (kits start at 12 floorball sticks, 12 floorball balls, stick bag).  Floorball kits come in Elementary School, Middle School and High School sizes with each kit having a mixture of different size floorball sticks that best represents the age brackets (i.e. stick heights are weighted based on grade levels)

The SECOND option is to customize a floorball kit of your own. For this option, it is best to speak directly to a Premier Sports Leagues operator about school budget, grade levels, use of floorball equipment (teaching, in school game play, competitions) as there are many different stick sizes and compositions, each with a wide range in pricing.

Premier Sports Leagues has volume pricing agreements in place with our suppliers for sticks, balls and nets so most likely can get better pricing over that of local or national (floorball) equipment retailers.
