Rules Of Play For Floorball

RULES OF PLAY FOR FLOORBALL (SIMPLIFIED) - see VIDEO tab below for more definition

  1. Games will be played with a minimum of four  players and a goalie on the court for each team. The goalie may be substituted for an additional player if desired. For an official game, five players each team is required.

  2. No catching ball or hands on ball, except for goalie, infraction results in a free hit.

  3. No jumping while in or near the play (one foot must be on the ground when receiving the ball), infraction results in a free hit.

  4. Players are not permitted to interfere with other players, or play, in such a way that the cause of such interference results in a gain of possession that favours the offending team

  5. Players may only go down on one knee to make plays or block shots. Only the goalie may play from their knees, infraction results in a free hit.

  6. Ball must be received on a stick below knee level.  If contact is made above the knee but below the waist, infraction results in a free hit. If contact is made with the ball above the waist, a penalty shot is awarded.

  7. Sticks must stay below waist level when shooting with a similar follow through allowed. Stick above waist on a shot will result in a free hit.

  8. No stick checking, lifting, or pinning of sticks. A minor infraction results in a free hit.  An infraction where the shooter is in a scoring position or in the process of shooting at the net results in a penalty shot.

  9. No holding of stick, players, or shirt, infraction will result in a free hit.

  10. If a player's stick blade, who has FULL control and possession of the ball, gets contact in such a way that the ball is dislodged and the offending team gains control, an infraction results in a free hit at the point of contact.  If however, the ball is dislodged but possession is regain by the team having original possession, that team must gain equal or better position from the point of contact otherwise a free hit at the original point of contact is awarded.  If the non offending team maintains or gains positional advantage from the origin at point of the infraction, play will resume.

  11. No playing your stick between another player’s legs. Results in a free hit.

  12. No body contact with the exception of incidental shoulder contact, infractions will result in a free hit, or at the discretion of the referee a 2- 10 minute "benching", depending on the severity of the contact.

  13. No playing the ball with the head – infraction results in a free hit.

  14. If a ball goes out of bounds behind the net (as a result of a direct hit or tip) it will be repositioned at the corner marks and a free hit awarded to the team not responsible for the errant ball.

  15. If a ball goes out of bound or is deemed unplayable by the referee, the ball will be placed at the closest point the occurrence happened (within 3.5 meters) and, at the discretion of the referee,:
    1. either a face off will occur or
    2. the team not causing the errant ball will take possession and be awarded a free hit at that point

  16. Players must allow 3 metre distance when goalie has possession of ball.  If opposing player refuses to move and ball makes contact within the 3 metre, a free hit in opposing players zone is rewarded.  Goalie has 5 seconds to release the ball.  Failing to do so results in a free corner hit for opposing team.

  17. When throwing the ball, goalies must ensure at least one bounce in their end prior to the ball crossing into the opponents end.  Failure to do so will result in the non offending team getting a corner free hit in offending teams end.

  18. Goalies are permitted to use their hands to grab a ball provided at least one foot is in the secondary crease (larger crease, typically basketball key).  Outside that secondary crease, goalies can only kick the ball.  If a goalie picks up a ball and at least one foot is not in the secondary crease, a penalty shot is awarded to the opposing team.

  19. Players cannot intentionally pass the ball to their goalie.  The result of such infraction is a free corner hit for the opposing team.

  20. Players are not permitted in the goalie crease.  Crease violation occurs when:
    1.  the offensive player is in a defensive goalie's crease.  Results in a possession change and free corner hit for defensive team.
    2. the defensive player is in their goalie's crease during a scramble, but no opportunity for the offensive team to score.  Results in a possession change and free corner hit for offensive team.
    3. the defensive player is in the crease when the offensive team is in the process of shooting or have an opportunity to score.  Results in a penalty shot (or goal is allowed).

  21. Face-offs: Face offs will be used to start the game at the beginning of each period and to re-start after each goal or if the ball is damaged. For a face-off, stick blade must be on the ground and perpendicular to center line, feet parallel to center line ball and the middle of the two players’ sticks.
Players cannot reverse their grip or hold the stick below the face-off line. Play starts with a whistle blow.

  22. Possession changes: Occurs in the situations cited above. Ball is played as a direct free hit similar to a soccer free kick, where the offending players must be 3 meters away and the ball must be shot or played to another player with a solid hit – not a sweeping motion.  Player having possession of the ball during a free hit has 3 seconds to hit the ball once the ball mark has been establish (or is approved by the referee) and the ball is not moving.  Failure to hit the ball within the 3 seconds results in a change of possession and a new free hit awarded to opposing team.

  23. Substitutions may occur at anytime provided the player coming off and player going on the court change at the bench (suggest a "high five" to denote a change).

  24. Repeated infractions result in a 2 - 10 minute "benching" of the player.

  25. Penalty shot will be award to the team who the infraction occurred.  Penalty shot will be taken at a set distance from the net and ball must be played with a solid hit- not a sweeping motion.  Players are to be behind the shooter.  Goalie knees must be positioned within the crease.  In the event there is no goal, face off in the corner will result.
